Jan (Doris Day) finds herself irritated by having to share her phone line with Brad (Rock Hudson), whose frequent conversations with girlfriends prevent her from making private calls. They eventually reach an understanding about when each can use the line, but things don’t quite end there because he develops a fondness for her and decides to engineer a meeting. She has no interest in him, so he creates the identity of "Rex Stetson," a Texican visitor, and attempts to win her over. She's an interior designer, and one of her clients is also attracted to her. Jonathan (Tony Randall) even tried to buy her a car, though his affections aren’t returned—a detail he shares with his close friend who, predictably, is Brad. When Jan mentions this new admirer, he becomes suspicious and hires a detective to investigate “Rex”—which leads to revelations and some complications. All of this unfolds under the watchful eye of her maid, Alma (Thelma Ritter), contributing to what’s an amusing, though entirely foreseeable, comedy. There's a noticeable spark between Day and Hudson; Randall is likable as the character who plays off their increasingly silly behavior, and Ritter reliably elicits smiles with her witty observations. Aside from the title song, there's just one musical number, "Roly Poly," which isn’t particularly memorable but allows Day, Hudson, and Perry Blackwell to maintain an enjoyable pace. The script provides opportunities for nearly everyone to shine, and while it follows a familiar pattern, it remains entertaining.
