It’s been a considerable wait, but at long last there's a Nicolas Cage ("Rob") movie where he seems to have genuinely invested himself – and the result is effective. He resides in the wilderness alongside his truffle-hunting pig. Living far from civilization, his interactions with others are limited to encounters with "Amir" (Alex Wolff), who exchanges fungi for necessities. When the pig disappears, “Rob” demonstrates considerable resolve and resourcefulness while attempting to locate it. As additional storylines unfold, we find that the character has a much deeper backstory than simply being a pursuer of pigs, and as his connection with the younger man progresses, insights into what led him to choose this solitary existence emerge. The film fluctuates between moments that are touching, brutal, disheartening, and amusing; it serves well as an example of an actor returning to fundamentals – in every sense of the word – and Wolff is adequate enough in helping him convey his narrative. I didn’t care for the conclusion, though it wasn't precisely what I anticipated.
