I was intrigued when I chose to watch this film, and initially it seemed promising. The story held my attention and progressed well for most of its length. What ultimately lets the movie down is the ending; it really undermines everything that came before. It's a familiar problem—so many films would be great if only those in charge could craft an ending as satisfying as the beginning. From a technical standpoint, there’s nothing particularly remarkable to note. The cinematography, sound effects, sets, costumes, locations, and music are all competently done, but don’t offer anything new or especially memorable. It's just a fairly standard film. The acting is generally good; it deserves recognition that the cast put in a solid effort. Even John Travolta, an actor I typically dislike, delivers a likable and committed performance, creating a character who’s easy to root for and has the charisma needed to draw you in. Robert Duvall and Forest Whitaker are also excellent, both bringing depth to their supporting roles that add interest to the story. Kyra Sedgwick doesn't fare as well; her role seems limited to being a romantic connection, without much substance beyond that. The script starts with some interesting ideas—they aren’t entirely original, but they do grab your attention. It centers on an average man living in rural America who gains extraordinary intelligence after experiencing something strange involving a light from the sky on his birthday. Along with this new ability to think and solve problems quickly, he develops an uncontrollable urge to read, learn everything possible, and improve things around him—essentially becoming a visionary. The possibility of alien involvement is explored throughout. However, as the film nears its conclusion, the script falls apart, delivering an incredibly disappointing ending that not only disregards what’s been built up but also fails to explain even half of what happened to this man. It felt like a deliberate letdown, almost insulting to the audience.
