The movie Phenomena, with its distinctive musical motif, presents itself as something unusual. Upon arriving at a Swiss school for young women, Jennifer Corvino, portrayed by Jennifer Connelly, finds herself caught up in events surrounding a serial killer. She receives assistance from her insect companions and Professor John McGregor, played by Donald Pleasence. From horror filmmaker Dario Argento, who also co-wrote the script, Phenomena is an uneven experience. Setting aside the altered American release known as Creepers, the complete, original version remains flawed. While Argento's direction demonstrates considerable skill—which accounts for the film’s generally positive standing—the screenplay (also by Franco Ferrini) doesn't manage to create a coherent story. The movie’s rhythm feels erratic, conversations frequently come across as clumsy, and it’s unfortunate that Donald Pleasence isn’t utilized more effectively. Nevertheless, there are enough strong elements from Argento's directorial vision to place Phenomena slightly above mediocrity, even though the film primarily engages the senses rather than intellectual thought. It earns a rating of 6/10.
