A movie reminiscent of The Thing, though distantly related, unfolds in a remote Colorado mountain town. Two sisters, portrayed by Rose McGowan and Joanna Going, arrive in the Rockies to find the town practically deserted, save for a few bodies. They subsequently meet Sheriff Affleck and his deputies as the unsettling situation escalates; Liev Schreiber takes on one of the deputy roles. Peter O'Toole appears as an unusual British writer who offers assistance, while Clifton Powell embodies the leader of an Army unit dispatched to investigate the town. Released in 1998, this film draws its story from a screenplay and novel penned by Dean Koontz. The narrative shares similarities with “The Thing” (1982), transplanting it to a Colorado setting and introducing elements like two female leads. McGowan and Going are visually striking, but the movie doesn't fully utilize their appeal; Joanna Going, for example, is dressed in conspicuously oversized tan trousers throughout the entire film. The initial portion of the story establishes an atmosphere of intrigue and suspense, punctuated by several genuinely unsettling moments. However, the latter half shifts its focus to the origin of the horror and its intricate nature.
