There are men of considerable height, but then there’s the "Tall Man." I recall seeing the advertisement, or preview as some might say, for Phantasm while waiting for Invasion of the Body Snatchers to begin in December of 1978. And that trailer stuck with me, because it seemed genuinely frightening. The image that really stood out was the scene where the main villain, the Tall Man, played by Angus Scrimm, is positioned outside a child’s bedroom window (during nighttime) peering in over the boy's head. It gave me a jolt ... A real one. And being into horror films—even as a kid—I immediately turned to my mother who was sitting beside me and said, "Ooh, ma, I need to see that movie!" Phantasm appeared terrifying...and I enjoyed scary movies. My mom agreed. It wasn't until the following year, in April of 1979, that we (just my mother and myself at that time) finally saw Phantasm. And it’s frightening, I swear. Frightening, I swear. As I later discovered, the boy whose window the Tall Man was looking into in the advertisement is named Mike. It's frightening, I swear. If you are going to watch this horror film for the first time, be ready to jump and feel uneasy while watching it; it’s that unsettling. I think Clive Barker (rest his soul) later took inspiration from Phantasm when creating his own cult classic, "Hellraiser". That's something I will always maintain. Phantasm is pure dread. They simply don’t make horror movies like this anymore. Watch this one with the lights on, everyone.
