I watched the 1977 film beforehand to make sure I wouldn’t be missing anything with this updated version. The original was decent, and so is this one. The biggest change between the two is the technology used, but there's been a significant improvement across all aspects of the production. It felt more pleasant than the earlier movie. The visuals are very good, all the performers deliver strong performances, as do the settings, however, the story felt too brief—not the film itself, mind you. At over ninety minutes long, it seemed like just an introduction. Consequently, there wasn't much progression; everything felt like a setup for something more. That means a sequel could be quite exciting, or perhaps it shouldn’t happen at all. The story centers on Pete, a five-year-old boy who was raised by Elliot the dragon after he got lost in the woods following an accident involving his parents. Now eleven, he encounters people from a nearby town with their own plans. It's as if he has regained what he lost six years earlier. Misunderstandings arise and humans interfere with Elliot’s habitat, leading to chaos and a thrilling final act before the story wraps up. The young actor who played Pete reminded me somewhat of Sarah Snook, but he was good, as were all the other performers. The film didn't quite live up to my expectations. Its box office performance wasn’t impressive compared to other Disney movies, so a sequel is uncertain; however, the story concludes with many possibilities still unexplored. I think you will probably enjoy watching it because everything felt very agreeable, but only a limited number of people might appreciate it in the end. Whether or not you'll be one of them remains to be seen, but it’s definitely worth checking out. 6/10
