This is a well-made historical film, but it doesn’t possess the same emotional resonance as some of Mike Leigh’s other works. That's understandable, because his films haven't previously been considered grand in scale. I frequently mention in my reviews that I tend to be more tolerant than many viewers when it comes to movies with a deliberate pace. And, given that I write novels and include substantial amounts of dialogue, lengthy conversations on screen don’t bother me. It seems this film didn't have the same emotional punch as other Mike Leigh films, possibly because of its broader scope. It’s just how things are; people might dismiss a tragedy occurring somewhere else if it involves hundreds of deaths, but they may become deeply moved by a well-crafted story about one individual's experience. The film includes many individuals. There were so many extras that I honestly thought I might spot myself in the background. With such a large number of main characters and viewpoints, I didn’t really manage to connect with any of them particularly strongly. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie, and I wouldn’t have watched a documentary about this topic.
