Gary Cooper demonstrates a depth to his performances beyond Western roles within this cinematic take on George Du Maurier’s fanciful play. He embodies the central figure, initially depicted as a hesitant young man (Act 1), who later transitions into an architect securing a desirable position renovating the stables belonging to the affluent "Duke of Towers" (John Holiday) (Act 2). Following an awkward beginning, affection develops between him and the "Duchess" (Ann Harding), a connection that doesn’t escape the Duke's notice. A confrontation occurs; the "Duke" dies, and "Ibbetson" finds himself imprisoned for the act. The subsequent events (Act 3) unfold as a dreamlike mystery as they continue their lives seemingly bound by an illusion.
