The impact of a movie can frequently stem from the recollections it triggers just as much as the film itself. Each viewing transports me back to our classroom’s 16mm projector and the weak sound system that played the Prokofiev music. The central characters are each linked with their own, fitting musical instrument, and narration is used sparingly—sometimes provided by David Bowie—to recount the story of a boy who refuses obedience. Perhaps his grandfather should have kept the gate closed so “Peter” couldn’t wander off while sleeping, but he didn't, and the young boy ventures out into the snow. Equipped with a toy gun and joined by a bird, a duck, and a hungry cat, he sets off to find a dangerous wolf. It seems unlikely any of them will last long enough for the hunters to arrive with their firearms. This is my preferred Disney animated film; it’s beautifully rendered, has memorable characters, and the music infuses everything with a playful and delightful energy. If I were limited to just one short film on a deserted island, this would be my choice.
