This adaptation failed to work out at all. It feels flat, rushed, and like so many crucial parts of the story—the background information and how the characters grow—are simply gone (as they are present in the novel). What’s strange is that they removed Judd's wife from the book's storyline but added a character who isn't nearly as important, Missy Dandridge. The movie doesn’t allow enough time to become invested in any of the people involved, particularly not Missy. But my biggest issue with this film is Dale Midkiff; he seems completely detached throughout and it really detracts from the experience for me. Everyone else, notably Fred Gwynne and Denise Crosby, deliver much stronger performances by comparison.
