The story behind the book that became this movie is quite something—it almost wasn’t published at all. Stephen King wrote it while renting a house, drawing on actual events from that time, but he always felt uneasy about its overall feel and only turned it in because he had to. It's fortunate he did, as the story offers a strong foundation for horror, centering around the profound pain of loss. The movie captures the right atmosphere; the portrayal of the family feels just right as things are set up for what follows, and the house itself, along with the Pet Sematary featured in the title, creates an unsettling presence. Fred Gwynne gives a wise performance as one of the characters. While it doesn't completely unleash its potential for truly shocking horror, the filmmakers do manage to deliver plenty of frightening moments and suspense, making this a better-than-average adaptation of King’s work. The inclusion of music by The Ramones is also a nice touch—they were big fans of King’s, so much so that they wrote a song with the same name as the book and even named an album after it. I'd give it 6.5 out of 10.
