The film "Marji" follows a young girl’s experiences in Iran during a period of significant political upheaval, beginning with the fall of the Pahlavi dynasty and the establishment of the Islamic republic. Initially, there's widespread hope that the new government will bring about greater freedom for everyone—a belief that quickly proves unfounded, as circumstances become precarious for this sincere and frank girl. To protect their family from harm, her parents arrange for her to study in Vienna. However, she discovers a culture vastly different from her own, one that fails to meet her initial, somewhat idealistic views. As a result, she feels lost, questioning her sense of belonging and where she might find it. The animation style is quite well done; simple, black-and-white visuals, occasionally incorporating a stop-motion feel, effectively depict the shifting political landscape back home and her own evolving perspective as she matures and finds herself increasingly adrift. It attempts to cover a lot of ground, progressing through the years at a rapid pace, which can be somewhat frustrating. There were moments when I wished for more time to explore certain facets of her journey, but overall it remains an engaging and stimulating film that is definitely worth seeing.
