This Canadian production, 'Heavenly Creatures', acknowledges Peter Jackson’s film as an influence, although it draws from a true story—that of two sisters who felt abandoned by their mother and her partner due to neglect and abuse. The girls then devised a plan to escape the circumstances they considered unfair and deserving of a better outcome. Originally intended for television, the movie received a restricted theatrical run and elicited varied reactions. While I found merit in the film's subject matter, its initial portion felt underdeveloped; the second half is what ultimately won me over, as the story gained momentum toward the end. Because so little information exists about the actual sisters, changes were made to the characters and plot elements to accommodate the actors’ creative choices. Abigail Breslin and Georgie Henley weren't disappointing, though it takes some suspension of disbelief to accept these young performers as being older than they appear. It won't be long before they are leading roles! Overall, I think this film is worth seeing; I am drawn to stories rooted in reality because they offer insights into the world and the experiences of others, illuminating the reasons behind events that have shaped lives. 7/10
