This was my introduction to Duvivier’s and Gabin's work, and I am stunned by how impressive it is. Gabin delivers a truly remarkable performance; he commands attention with his sheer presence, seemingly without needing elaborate acting choices—he evokes the same feeling as De Niro or Pesci, making you forget you are watching an actor portraying someone, because he simply *is* that person. The supporting cast also shines, and the film’s character development is superb; every individual feels distinct and carefully constructed, regardless of their role's size. I appreciate the direction, editing, and writing, especially those brief moments highlighting smaller characters, such as the scene where the woman listens to her own singing on a phonograph. It's an outstanding movie, easily earning a 5/5 rating.
