The connection between Irene Dunne and Cary Grant feels genuine as they portray a couple looking forward to their future, until disaster and loss force them to confront a life without children. Then, with some assistance from the friendly "Applejack" (Edgar Buchanan), they consider adoption. Their lives have become quite simple; he’s attempting to keep a local newspaper afloat, its circulation fluctuating between 901 and 908 copies, so navigating the necessary paperwork will be difficult. Fortunately, the sympathetic adoption agent Beulah Bondi ("Miss Oliver") approves of them, and soon they welcome their daughter, "Trine," into their family. Both main actors are appealing throughout the early part of the story – frequently humorous, particularly Grant with his natural comedic timing – and while not demanding much from them, it’s a pleasant experience. However, another tragedy occurs, pushing the film toward an overly sentimental and melodramatic conclusion. The final fifteen minutes felt cheap to me, as if they were exploiting emotions for effect. What had previously unfolded smoothly now feels forced, and in my opinion, it significantly diminished the enjoyment of everything that came before. It's still worthwhile viewing; George Stevens directs well, and the writing and dialogue are often witty and clever – but that ending... I’m afraid it really let things down.
