While "Pearl" functions as a backstory to “X,” director Ti West transforms this slasher into something much more layered—a detailed examination of a character portrayed and also co-written by Mia Goth. Mia Goth’s performance really expands on the Pearl character, delving into her strong longing to achieve a life beyond that of an ordinary farm girl. There's a particularly striking sequence lasting close to ten minutes without pause, where you witness unfiltered, intense feelings from the character in a truly compelling way. It deserves recognition that they used practical effects and filmed most of the movie in bright daylight. The violent scenes do start to feel familiar, and the plot doesn’t manage to avoid being fairly foreseeable, making it not quite as engaging as the earlier film. Rating: B
