This neo-noir film set in Chicago stars Mel Gibson alongside Gregg Henry and Maria Bello. Following a robbery involving an Asian criminal group, the protagonist—a man known for his direct approach (Gibson)—is abandoned by his partners (Henry and Deborah Kara Unger) and left to die within the city’s darker areas. Miraculously, he survives and seeks retribution, along with recovering his missing $70,000. Maria Bello, Lucy Liu, William Devane, Kris Kristofferson, James Coburn, and several other actors appear in supporting roles. "Payback," released in 1999, is a contemporary take on the film noir genre; its colors are subdued to the point of resembling black and white—though I understand the Director’s Cut enhances them. It's a reimagining of James Coburn’s “Point Blank” (1967) and possesses an entertaining quality reminiscent of films by Quentin Tarantino, though it falls short of achieving the level of excellence found in "Pulp Fiction" (1994) or even "Jackie Brown" (1997). Interestingly, my wife enjoyed it more than I did and rated it 7 out of 10, likely because she’s a fan of Gibson. The movie has a runtime of one hour and forty minutes and was primarily filmed in Chicago, with additional scenes shot at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles and studio work completed in Burbank. There is also an opening establishing shot featuring Manhattan. GRADE: B-
