I recall him from The Mists of Avalon, a miniseries from 2001, plus TV movies like King of Texas and Purgatory. And just the year before, in 2014, there was the miniseries Houdini with Adrian Brody... German director Uli Edel directed Pay The Ghost in 2015. Nicholas Cage and Sarah Wayne Callies portray Mike and Kirsten Lawford, a husband and wife who lose their son Charlie one Halloween night. Unbeknownst to them, they become part of an old curse involving the ghost of a woman burned for witchcraft, who said she would return to take three children every Halloween. Mike gets a chance to rescue his son before midnight, but will the spirit permit it? I considered this film excellent; it was unsettling, had interesting characters, and a carefully constructed story. The visual effects showing kids appearing unexpectedly were impressive, as was the scene where the blonde librarian was departing for home and was physically thrown out of the window to her death—that moment was genuinely frightening. Even the depiction of the psychic’s body, seemingly burned from within, was disturbing; I didn't anticipate her demise, expecting only a strong reaction instead. The person in charge of the building covered in graffiti also made for an unusual and intriguing character, contributing to the overall feeling. It’s certainly a journey worth taking, and it proved entertaining—I suggest watching this film. The acting was as good as you could hope for, especially with Cage participating; I think he gave everything here.
