I’m putting this 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' behind me now. I am familiar with Bobby Fischer, a brilliant American chess player; in fact, after seeing ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer,’ which is another biographical film like this one. Beyond that, I don’t know much about his life, so I appreciate the movie. From the director of several well-known films comes this, supposedly to motivate you. Hold on, did I say motivate, because I'm having trouble seeing how it qualifies. Bobby Fischer was an exceptional player, but he struggled with mental health issues. So, you could draw a comparison to John Nash from ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ although they come from different areas and are highly intelligent. The film leaned a bit toward American pride, especially regarding the victory over the Russians in the chess match. I’m trying to remain objective about that. Bobby was focused on shaping his life through the game that demands intellect. The story started with a brief look at his childhood and quickly jumped to adult Bobby Fischer competing in a major tournament—a championship against the best players. It's well-shot, with many exciting moments; Tobey Maguire as the lead was excellent. Liev Schreiber was also a pleasant surprise with his intermittent appearances. It’s a decent film, but it feels unfinished, like there should have been more to it. As I mentioned earlier, it had an impact, but not in a way that felt truly inspiring, which is why I question the writing. A person like him and a movie about him ought to have been considered for numerous international awards, including the Golden Globe and the Oscars. Unfortunately, it didn’t do well at the box office or receive recognition at film festivals. It did get some praise, though, seemingly more as an afterthought than for artistic merit. If you watch it, you'll notice something isn't quite right; otherwise, a movie like this wouldn't have gone largely unnoticed. I hope someone else makes another film about him that does the story justice. For now, it’s worth watching, but whether you enjoy it will likely depend on your interest in Bobby Fischer—whether it's his game or his personal problems that appeal to you. _7/10_
