Reno on Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

3/10 · Oct 9, 2017

This week has been rough; most of the movies I watched were disappointing. The initial portion was alright, actually kind of amusing—a pleasant surprise that made me think a follow-up might be worthwhile. However, watching this film convinced me that a sequel wasn’t needed at all. It seemed intended to be humorous, but it just didn't land and felt pretty dull seeing the same jokes recycled. Making fun of someone’s weight feels particularly inappropriate these days; you can imagine how quickly something like that would blow up on social media. The story itself was weak; even the characters, including the antagonists, felt dated. I suspect this film wouldn't have been well-received if it had actually been made in the nineties. The idea of a vacation combined with a convention isn’t exactly fresh territory. Paul, after a brief marriage and the loss of his mother, takes his daughter to Las Vegas. As he tries to be a good father and reconnects with old friends, an adventure unfolds when criminal activity surfaces during the conference. His attempts to protect his daughter and stop the crime become the film's main focus from there. I felt like casting Raini Rodriguez as Paul’s daughter was too deliberate. The movie seemed packed with television actors everywhere you looked. It wasn't just the directing or acting that fell short; it was the writing itself. This style of comedy is now seen as outdated, which might explain why Rowan Atkinson stopped making those kinds of films. There won’t be a third installment, that much is clear. If you saw the first one and are hesitant about this sequel, trust me—you're not missing out on anything. I'd recommend revisiting the original instead; it isn’t great, but it’s considerably better. 3/10
