Stanley Kubrick’s *Paths of Glory* remains strikingly relevant and powerful today. The story unfolds in 1916, depicting French and German forces entrenched in muddy terrain when a reckless assault on a German position is ordered. Many soldiers quickly understand the mission's futility and retreat, prompting accusations of cowardice from those in command. Someone has to be held accountable... Once removed from distribution in France and never released in Spain, *Paths of Glory* delivers a devastating critique of military leadership. It focuses on those generals who observe events through binoculars while young men are sent into danger, then return to enjoy lavish meals, the smell of decay clinging to them as much as it does in no man’s land. But this is acceptable for the war effort; there might even be advancement for a fortunate individual with appropriate attire... The film, based on Humphrey Cobb's novel, is structured in two parts. The initial section portrays the chaos of the attack and the brutal realities of warfare. Kubrick and cinematographer Georg Krause effectively convey the anxiety and resentment that consume the soldiers. The camera’s detached and precise approach complements the subject matter perfectly, guiding viewers through the grim trenches and desolate no man's land – one a place of foreboding, the other a horrific display of carnage as bodies are torn apart, while others retreat with lost limbs or fractured minds. The second part transitions into a legal procedural, illustrating how the generals plot to make an example of those who retreated. Apparently, cowardice and failing in duty warrant execution to preserve the army's reputation. A group of scapegoats is assembled, but their Colonel (played exceptionally by Kirk Douglas) insists on defending them. The resulting proceedings are filled with tension, anguish, and accusations, as errors prove impossible to overcome. This culminates in a truly remarkable ending – both emotionally devastating and enraging – underscored by a mournful song that evokes sadness for the characters and the audience. *Paths of Glory* is a monochrome work of art showcasing impressive technical skill, outstanding performances, and superb writing; it’s a strong contender for one of the greatest anti-war films ever made. 10/10
