I'm predisposed to enjoy films centered around romantic relationships that begin in childhood, given my own parents’ history as a couple. Nevertheless, I feel like I wasted money seeing this lengthy and dull movie. Celine Song’s first film has received considerable acclaim, being called a remarkable work of cinema and one of the best movies released last year, but I can't share that assessment. The story involves Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), close friends from Seoul who are separated and then reunited in New York after 24 years. Their reconnection gives them a chance to consider what could have been. However, their time together is largely filled with awkward silences, pointless exchanges, and lost opportunities for any real discussion, creating moments that make even the most tolerant audience member want to urge the characters to hurry up. These interactions don’t come anywhere near capturing the energy of their earlier friendship or the genuine conversations Nora has with her husband, Arthur (John Magaro). Ultimately, it's a tedious film attempting to be more profound than it is, but failing to achieve that goal. The biggest issue is probably the narrative itself, which seems earnest but lacks depth and sufficient writing to fully develop its potential, even though there are some good performances, beautiful visuals, and an affecting musical score. It seems like the director has a lot of promise, at least judging by the film’s visual style, but the story needs more development. I hope her next project is better.
