Passion Fish has earned a place among my favorite films, one I anticipate revisiting repeatedly. It strikes me as remarkably well-crafted, with consistently strong performances across all roles, even those of the background figures who appear throughout the story alongside May–Alice and Chantelle. The film contains considerable dramatic weight but avoids tipping into excessive sentimentality—a contrast to the television shows May–Alice previously appeared in. There's a good amount of humor woven in as well, which balances out the heavier moments and contributes to believable character development that makes it easier to become invested in their journeys.
