Tessa Thompson portrays Renie, who is married to the doctor Brian (André Holland). After a tiring day, he goes for tea and unexpectedly meets Clare (Ruth Negga), someone from his past whom he doesn't initially recognize due to her altered appearance. It turns out that even her spouse, John (Alexander Skarsgård), who displays clear prejudice, is unaware of his wife’s racial identity. Clare finds herself isolated and gradually discovers comfort and acceptance within her friend’s social circle, qualities that Renie seems to have in limited measure. The film then offers a quiet exploration of how the connections between these women, along with the husband, children, and even the maid, evolve. It's an accessible movie, visually appealing thanks to the cinematography, costumes, and lighting which all contribute to the overall aesthetic. However, the narrative itself is less compelling. Beyond several points that stretch credibility, Thompson’s acting feels forced; she seems to be overdoing it. This contrast highlights Negga’s nuanced portrayal of her character, diminishing the impact of what should have been a thought-provoking and cleverly composed story. As for the conclusion, I won't elaborate much. It gives the impression that director Rebecca Hall simply exhausted her creative resources rather than having run out of plot.
