Despite being largely dismissed by critics, Passengers has found favor with many science fiction enthusiasts. It’s not particularly innovative, instead opting for familiar sci-fi tropes, but it ultimately becomes a well-constructed romance that explores how people respond to unusual circumstances. While viewers are likely anticipating intense action sequences, the film functions effectively as a character exploration—something only truly apparent in its final third, without those explosions. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence possess considerable charm, enough to propel the narrative through its less stable moments. Michael Sheen is also well-suited for his role as the Android bartender, Arthur. The visual effects are noteworthy, and director Morten Tyldum skillfully combines the various scenes, with a particularly outstanding sequence depicting a loss of gravity being a standout. The sound design deserves recognition as well. Those unfamiliar with the film should anticipate something akin to a Robinson Crusoe romance set in space rather than a straightforward science fiction action movie—though one that possesses more intellectual depth than initially suggested. Overall, it’s an enjoyable experience and contributes to what is shaping up to be a remarkable decade for fans of science fiction. 7/10
