Facing off against The Reign of Terror—or perhaps it’s our suffering because of it—is a peculiar experience. Among the numerous films that took inspiration from *Die Hard*, *Passenger 57* might very well be the least successful. The narrative centers on Wesley Snipes as John Cutter, an airline security specialist whose flight to L.A. becomes complicated when he finds himself in the middle of a hostage situation orchestrated by Charles Rane, a villain with a difficult past. We get one-liners, punches, and stunts as Cutter fights for the side of good. Kevin Hooks’ film functions adequately as a simple action movie, largely because of Snipes' performance. He was still six years from becoming famous in *Blade*, but it's clear he had what it takes to be an action hero; his presence brings charm and physicality that help carry the film through its weak writing. The script feels like the writers just wanted to put Snipes into a series of challenging scenarios so he could beat up everyone, using that as justification for the plot. There’s also an awkward romantic subplot shoehorned in. Ultimately, it's a carelessly made movie—a cynical attempt at profit that many recognized when it was first released. Bruce Payne does his best to portray Charles Rane as genuinely menacing, but he doesn’t quite manage it. Liz Hurley seems ill-at-ease while holding a weapon, and the female lead, Alex Datcher, appears overwhelmed. Tom Sizemore and Bruce Greenwood also have brief appearances—but they are minor characters that you wish had been more developed. Stanley Clarke's musical score is dreadful; it’s the kind of music one would expect to hear in a soft-core adult film—you know, those where the people involved are making love but still wearing their underwear! The movie suffers from poor plotting, weak writing, and generally subpar technical aspects. I don’t demand much from action movies, truly, but at least try to give the story some heart to entertain audiences looking for a good time. 3/10 for Snipes' fighting and Liz Hurley's legs.
