Tyler (played by Jacob Scipio) and Maddie (Lou Llobell) leave city life behind, opting for a van conversion and a nomadic existence. She’d put some design work into their vehicle, and they begin their journey with a sense of adventure. However, she isn't entirely sold on the idea, and her doubts only deepen after they encounter a disturbing traffic accident during their first night on the road. That incident proves to be just the beginning as increasingly unsettling events unfold. Are they sharing their new living space with something supernatural? At an unexpected gathering of fellow travelers, Diana (Melissa Leo) shares a set of rules intended to shield them from the threat of the "Passenger." This legend originates with the tale of St. Christopher and his companion, who initially seemed harmless. It is then revealed that this traveling partner was actually a demon, now identifiable by a dog collar, determined to instill terror and violence in anyone who stops beside the road after sunset. The film follows a predictable structure, and neither the performances nor the script bring anything particularly fresh to the table. Nevertheless, the effective use of darkness, expansive rural landscapes, along with some jarring camera angles and sound design create moments that are genuinely frightening, culminating in an ending I found satisfying. It’s unlikely anyone will recall this film for long; it feels like a product churned out on an assembly line. Still, it's adequately entertaining.
