Close relationships have the potential to be wonderful, but they can also descend into painful, damaging experiences when driven by selfish motives, careless actions, or risky behavior that causes significant distress. This is precisely what unfolds in Ira Sachs’s latest film, a portrayal of a charismatic, unconventional gay filmmaker, Tomas (played by Franz Rogowski), who begins an unplanned affair with a woman named Agathe (Adèle Exarchopoulos). The situation leaves his partner of many years, Martin (Ben Whishaw), questioning the stability of their relationship. As time goes on, things become increasingly tangled as each person involved attempts to navigate what’s next, especially considering Tomas's escalating tendency toward thoughtlessness. Some viewers might consider the story's disturbing and shocking turns unrealistic, but it's likely that anyone who has ever watched sensationalized news could acknowledge that these events may not be entirely unbelievable. In this sense, the film offers a frank, brave examination of how things can go wrong in similar circumstances, filled with anger, frustration, dark humor, and a good deal of skepticism. Certain viewers might find aspects of the story objectionable or even disgusting; however, like witnessing an awful accident, it's also something that many people may struggle to turn away from, largely due to the incredibly believable performances from the three lead actors. Those who are easily upset by explicit and suggestive sexual content should be aware that the film contains a significant amount of it. However, for those who enjoy intimate dramas that don’t shy away from difficult subjects and portray them realistically, this is among the best available. Just prepare to feel stunned – and disoriented.
