The film centers on Pierre (Romain Duris), through whom we experience this collection of storylines. A dancer, he receives the news of a heart condition that forces him to stop working and depend on his sister, Élise (Juliette Binoche), while awaiting a transplant. His days now mostly consist of watching old videos or observing the world from his balcony. Élise, meanwhile, is dealing with a great deal – she’s divorced, raising three children, and works as a social worker. As negotiations for a part-time position to care for Pierre are met with resistance, she moves in with him, prompting her own self-reflection. Simultaneously, there's Professor Verneuil (Fabrice Luchini), who is presented with the opportunity of a €100,000 contract to host a Parisian history television series, but finds himself even more drawn to a student with whom he begins an affair. His brother and his wife, along with a vegetable market trader and an immigrant from Cameroon, also appear as the story’s connections become apparent, culminating in a satisfying resolution. It's less of a traditional narrative and more like a study of lives that are loosely bound by family ties and location; it offers a somewhat humorous but ultimately touching exploration of familial relationships, desires, and pervasive human insecurities. I wished there had been more to Pierre’s character, though Binoche performs admirably in her role, as does Luchini, and the soundtrack contributes to the film's overall charm, making for an agreeable drama.
