Parenthood remains a worthwhile film, holding up surprisingly well three decades later. The screenwriting credits include individuals also responsible for City Slickers and Fever Pitch, two films I enjoy. The movie evokes a similar response in me and my wife as Rain Man did; it brought to mind our daughter with autism and offered moments of laughter amidst everyday frustrations. Parenthood explores numerous common challenges faced by parents, allowing viewers to find humor in difficult situations. The cast is strong overall. Kianu Reeves’ portrayal of Tod stands out—he initially seems like an unsuitable match for the daughter but ultimately proves helpful in guiding their troubled son. Several scenes stick with you, and one line my wife and I frequently recall even now occurs when a son named Larry is ejected from a car by individuals he owes money to. His father, portrayed with understated gravitas by Jason Robards, inquires about who those people were. Tod responds that they were simply friends. The memorable line delivered by Robards’ character is, “Friends. Friends slow down; they even stop.” The film contains numerous clever lines alongside more substantial humor. If you haven't seen it and are looking for a heartwarming movie, I recommend checking it out. We likely will watch it again before too long, as we own it on DVD and some time has passed since our last viewing.
