I approached 'Paranoia' aware that it had received overwhelmingly negative reactions from both critics and general audiences. Despite that, I experienced it as a fairly simple drama-thriller centered on corporate espionage and ethical dilemmas, bringing to mind similar films released in the eighties and nineties. The performances are solid, and the film itself is visually appealing. Does this mean 'Paranoia' feels old-fashioned and dull? It’s possible to view it that way. Expectations for movies within this genre have clearly risen considerably. Viewers now anticipate multiple interwoven plot elements and a constant stream of unexpected turns. And with a cast as impressive as the one assembled, shouldn't the production be backed by significant funding and feature an exceptionally contemporary screenplay, right? However, that isn’t the case. Ultimately, 'Paranoia' appears to be just another average film that isn't essential viewing. At times it stretches believability, but occasionally delivers some worthwhile drama. The audience's dissatisfaction seems rooted in unmet expectations, and I don't believe that warrants such harsh criticism. A Metacritic score of 32 and an IMDb rating of 4.9 (as of November 10, 2013) are remarkably low scores. I noticed that Stephen Holden from The New York Times commented on Liam Hemsworth’s performance, stating "Not since Taylor Lautner has Hollywood focused so intently on a handsome young man who seems so lacking in depth and readiness." It brought me back to the eighties and comparisons with Tom Cruise. Was his talent and presence significantly better?
