Paradise Highway feels like an imitation of A Perfect World, casting Morgan Freeman, Juliette Binoche, and Cameron Monaghan in parts reminiscent of Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, and Laura Dern, respectively, with Frank Grillo added to the mix—though his presence doesn't quite work out. This is precisely the sort of low-budget action movie where Grillo usually thrives; however, he’s held back here. Limiting him to a minor role actually hurts the film by giving the person best suited for this type of story the least amount of time on screen. That, combined with an unbelievable ending that forces a sentimental, feel-good resolution, pretty much destroys any possibility the movie might have had of being interesting. That leaves Freeman and Binoche. With Binoche, you get what’s expected: Morgan Freeman playing Morgan Freeman, which this time includes him wearing a pink fedora for reasons I can't quite grasp. If that appeals to you, great; I just hope we eventually see another appearance of the Morgan Freeman from Se7en. As for Juliette Binoche portraying a female truck driver, she seems too intelligent for the role—she doesn’t convincingly portray someone so naive. It's not my intention to suggest all women who drive trucks are unintelligent, but this character isn’t particularly bright. Consider that she sells her trailer in order to create a new life for young Leila (Hala Finley), essentially becoming her mother figure or older sister—or something along those lines. Even accepting the fact that they both have to live inside the truck cab, I still wonder how Truck Lady plans to support them now that she has two people to feed and no trailer? It’s like an O. Henry story if O. Henry were completely clueless. She isn't the only one at fault. I won’t go into details about what happens at the end; let’s just say that if those involved had simply waited a couple of days for Grillo’s character to be released from prison, they could have avoided a lot of trouble—and saved me from wasting almost two hours watching this film.
