It’s hard to find something truly wrong with this film, but equally difficult to get excited about it. The performances are passable; they're **competent**, certainly. Similarly, the filmmaking itself is done **competently**, though not particularly inspired. _Papillon_ seems determined to depict extreme suffering—showing its main character edging toward severe weight loss to convey his ordeal—yet simultaneously prevents him from developing more than a stylishly short beard during two years of solitary confinement.
