A Bible salesman (Ryan O’Neal) finds himself unexpectedly accompanied on a journey through 1930s Kansas by a young girl (Tatum O'Neal), who he is pressured into taking with him to St. Joseph, Missouri, where her aunt resides. Madeline Kahn portrays a carnival performer, assisted by a teenage boy played by P.J. Johnson. John Hillerman takes on two roles: as both a bootlegger and a police officer. "Paper Moon," released in 1973, is a black-and-white drama that incorporates humor. It brings to mind films like "The Highwaymen" (2019) and “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967), though with a less intense feel and considerably reduced levels of illegal activity, all while featuring interactions between the man and the young girl. I found the movie consistently enjoyable, although the conclusion felt understated—a bit more emotional impact would have been welcome. Still, that’s really just a small complaint. The film's length is 1 hour and 42 minutes; filming occurred in Kansas, Nebraska & Missouri, with one segment completed in Pasadena. GRADE: B
