A truly wonderful film. Ryan and Tatum O'Neal, working with Peter Bogdanovich’s exceptional direction, created one of the most moving and cleverly subtle movies to come from the nineteen seventies. Taking place in America during the Depression and filmed beautifully in stark black and white by Laszlo Kovacs, it remains fresh and engaging thanks to its skillful visuals and a sharp script. The plot centers on conman Moses Pray (R. O'Neal) joining forces with Addie Loggins (T. O'Neal), an orphan who might or might not be his daughter. Addie is a bright, spirited girl, difficult to deceive, and she smokes, uses bad language, and is quite capable of running her own scams. Initially resistant, Moses eventually recognizes Addie’s talents, and they develop a strong partnership as they travel across Kansas, devising schemes and accumulating money. But can their arrangement endure? The connection between the father and daughter feels inevitable, with young Tatum being an absolute standout. The writing provides both characters with plenty of chances to charm and entertain audiences through various antics and misadventures. Still, there’s a constant sense that things are destined to change, that we're firmly in bittersweet territory; this resourceful pair has earned our complete emotional investment, leaving us worried even as we find ourselves laughing.
