This tale of a New Orleans killer carrying a dangerous illness feels remarkably relevant even as of March 2020. Richard Widmark and Paul Douglas are tasked with finding this mobile source of disease before it spreads nationwide. The ensuing events unfold at a brisk pace, featuring Barbara Bel Geddes as Widmark’s attractive but somewhat dull girlfriend, and Jack Palance, who plays a threatening and unconcerned character named "Blackie." Along with Zero Mostel, he attempts to aid his dangerous friend in evading those trying to capture him. However, the actors seem stiff and don't quite work together effectively; it’s an excellent narrative hampered by a formulaic presentation. The film is also weakened by a forgettable musical score from Alfred Newman that’s overused by Elia Kazan, ultimately creating something far less impressive than it could have been.
