The future depicts Earth exhausted, prompting a spacecraft resembling Noah’s Ark to journey through space seeking a new home for humankind. Crewmember Bower, portrayed by Ben Foster, is roused from his suspended animation to discover the interstellar ship mysteriously empty and emitting strange sounds. As he explores, he encounters Payton (Dennis Quaid), whose escape pod malfunctioned, leaving him equally confused. While Payton remains on the bridge, Bower ventures into the ship’s interior, woefully unprepared for what awaits him. The film shares similarities with "The Descent" (2005), featuring a palpable sense of dread, considerable gore, and an unsettling feeling of being trapped, which Foster carries effectively. Quaid also delivers a solid performance, portraying a character who is never fully reliable. Cam Gigandet’s somewhat mysterious Gallo joins Bower as he connects with a small group of scientists barricaded in the ship's upper reaches, attempting to devise their own escape plan after an awkward initial encounter. The visual effects and cinematography create a convincing feeling of confinement and danger; combined with skillful lighting and sound design, they contribute to a genuinely foreboding atmosphere. Refreshingly, there’s dialogue that carries more substance—though not always easily heard—a welcome change from the typical action-oriented fare, and I found this to be a well-structured and above-average science fiction experience.
