Streaming services have expanded rapidly, and the global pandemic has significantly impacted the film industry, leading studios worldwide to consider alternative distribution methods. Debates surrounding releasing major films exclusively on platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, and Apple TV+ have become commonplace. While I consistently champion the unique experience of seeing movies in theaters, I believe offering viewers both options is a sensible approach that will likely become standard practice. This introduction might seem unrelated, but *Palmer* is debuting exclusively on Apple TV+, which is arguably one of the most overlooked streaming services available. Their original films (*Wolfwalkers*, *On the Rocks*) and television shows (*Servant*) have steadily gained recognition, and their production quality is something many studios would envy. I think a smaller film with a story like *Palmer’s* would likely struggle in traditional theaters, so I'm pleased Apple acquired it; I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes one of my favorite films this year. I had seen Fisher Stevens direct before, and I’m pleasantly surprised by the movie’s impact on me. Cheryl Guerriero’s screenplay isn’t revolutionary or strikingly original, but it uses a very effective structure that, when executed properly, resonates with many viewers. Featuring realistic and engaging dialogue, *Palmer* tells a familiar yet captivating story centered around two exceptionally inspiring characters who can offer comfort to those facing similar challenges in their lives. Ryder Allen portrays Sam, a child who possesses remarkable self-assurance and pride despite his difficult home life and the teasing he endures at school. He refuses to let others dictate his choices or preferences, regardless of what happens. His determination and happiness in expressing himself—whether through dressing as a princess, having tea parties, or simply being different—can be deeply moving for audiences, especially children. Ryder’s performance is exceptional; I expect he'll be a strong contender in awards categories for young actors, as his heartfelt portrayal genuinely moved me. Justin Timberlake plays Eddie Palmer, an ex-convict attempting to rebuild his life after spending over a decade incarcerated for a serious crime. However, the character’s presentation and development allow viewers to easily connect with him emotionally. Even though his sentence was justifiable, Palmer proves to be a kindhearted person who genuinely wants to redeem himself while acknowledging that he doesn't fit conventional norms, forming an unbreakable bond with Sam. Timberlake delivered a grounded, mature performance that surprised me. Ultimately, it’s the remarkably honest connection between Palmer and Sam that elevates the screenplay into such an inspirational story. Other meaningful relationships are also present, including those between Palmer and Maggie Hayes (Alisha Wainwright), and Palmer and his grandmother, Vivian (June Squibb). These characters significantly influence Palmer's life, and the actresses did a commendable job portraying them. I couldn’t bring myself to feel sympathy for Shelly (Juno Temple), even after witnessing acts of compassion intended to elicit forgiveness from the audience. The score by Tamar-kali is also noteworthy for its subtle effectiveness. I truly hope this indie film from Fisher Stevens finds its audience at home, as it's a heartwarming and emotionally powerful story about redemption and self-acceptance. *Palmer* may follow a familiar formula that viewers have seen many times before, but Cheryl Guerriero’s well-crafted screenplay is brought to life with remarkable authenticity and genuineness. The wonderful connection between Justin Timberlake and Ryder Allen’s characters is the film's heart and soul. Both actors deliver outstanding performances, as does the rest of the cast, but it’s the familiar yet heartfelt narrative filled with meaningful messages that ultimately brings tears to your eyes. Despite the unsuccessful attempt to generate empathy for Juno Temple’s character, Apple TV+ provides another highly recommended movie to enjoy with your family. Rating: A-
