If you're accustomed to Westerns, the movie will likely feel familiar. The story centers on a group of prospectors being pressured by a local strongman who wants to take over their land and force them off their claims, using threats or violence. Similar to “Sir Galahad,” a traveling preacher (Clint Eastwood) shows up and quickly becomes involved in helping the miners resist the plans of the calculating "LaHood" (Richard Dysart), his violent son "Josh" (Christopher Penn), sheriff enforcer "Stockburn" (John Russell), and their large, quiet companion (Richard Kiel). “Barret” (Michael Moriarty) and the spirited “Sarah” (Carrie Snodgrass) are among the miners who find themselves at a loss for what to do. They aren't lacking in bravery but they’re significantly outnumbered and not well-prepared to fight their opponents, so this mysterious religious figure has quite a challenge ahead of him. The rest of the story unfolds much as you would anticipate, and the supporting actors perform adequately, though the film primarily showcases Eastwood, who delivers more dialogue than he does in his other films directed by Leone, where he played the man-with-no-name character. He commands attention as this tense narrative develops, and there’s even a sense of an avenging angel to his portrayal, all set against some lovely landscapes. It highlights the hardships these pioneers faced, along with the dishonesty, greed, and violence that were common at the time, but using a man of God is successful in lessening the brutality. He uses intelligence, strength, and the enemies’ hesitation to physically confront a minister to make his infrequent use of a gun even more impactful when it occurs. The film moves at a deliberate pace, and while I did consider the subplot involving “Megan” (Sydney Penny) and her dog somewhat unsettling, the movie is definitely worth two hours of your time.
