The hopeful idea behind “Aunt Lucy’s” encouragement for young Paddington to journey from Peru to London, believing he'd be welcomed into a caring home filled with marmalade, was charming. His arrival at the train station—the very same kind of anonymous experience I've had there myself—is initially unremarkable. Fortunately, the Brown family’s late-night return from visiting a wool museum leads Mary (Sally Hawkins) to feel sorry for the lost bear. Her husband, Henry (Hugh Bonneville), is less than thrilled, his daughter Judy (Madeleine Harris) ignores him with her headphones on, but their son Jonathan (Samuel Joslin) is excited. Surely one night wouldn't hurt? We know things won’t be that straightforward, of course, but after a shaky beginning, the family starts to warm up to their new houseguest. Meanwhile, at the Natural History Museum, chief taxidermist Millicent (Nicole Kidman) isn’t particularly concerned about where her specimens come from, and a conversation with her supplier reveals this Peruvian bear has just arrived in town. What follows redefines the phrase "get stuffed" as we learn more about Paddington's background and his new, threatening enemy. The film is genuinely enjoyable, full of physical comedy and bolstered by strong performances from Bonneville and Hawkins, along with Peter Capaldi as the bothersome neighbor. Julie Walters manages to maintain her Scottish accent as the wise Mrs. Bird, and Kidman seems to be having a good time portraying someone reminiscent of "Lara Croft" mixed with “Hannibal Lector.” Like Michael Bond’s original stories—he makes a brief appearance in the film—the emotional core avoids excessive sentimentality but emphasizes politeness, respect, and decency, and it's clear our gentle bear will ultimately triumph. The visuals are excellent, the animation is top-notch, the script provides plenty of humor, and as far as family movies go, this has something to make nearly everyone smile. As Aunt Lucy would say....
