CinemaSerf on Paddington in Peru

Having settled comfortably with the Brown family and now possessing British citizenship, Paddington’s life seems idyllic until a letter arrives from Peru. The head of the bears’ retirement home (Olivia Colman) expresses worry that Aunt Lucy is becoming confused. Feeling a growing distance between them, mum Mary (Emily Mortimer) decides a trip is what they need – so they journey to the jungle. There, they meet Capt. Cabot (Antonio Banderas), who operates a riverboat with his daughter Gina (Cala Tous), and he agrees to take them on a cruise. Upon reaching their destination, they find that the elderly bear has disappeared, and they soon become entangled in some tricky schemes that could lead them on a dangerous quest for the legendary El Dorado. The problem is, with such a valuable treasure potentially within reach, Paddington finds himself unsure of who he can believe as the search takes him further into the wild! It’s an entertaining adventure, though it does feel somewhat sluggish, and the humor isn't as frequent as before; the story also feels familiar, borrowing too much from "Jungle Cruise" (2021) and "Sound of Music" (1965), with not enough focus on the bears themselves. I felt that Banderas and Colman were overacting a bit, and there was noticeably less of the warm feeling associated with the family’s previous adventures, which also meant fewer chances for Dame Julie Walters to participate. The story feels fragmented overall, lacking the appeal of the first two films featuring Michael Bond's character. It remains an agreeable family film, but I doubt it will stick in my memory for very long. Stay until the end credits – there’s a pleasant surprise appearance by someone familiar.
