Benoît Magimel portrays "De Roller," the relaxed French High Commissioner, whose job involves representing the French government in Tahiti. He travels around the island in a car with a chauffeur, attending various social events. However, things change when an admiral (Marc Susini) and some sailors arrive, sparking gossip. Soon, De Roller’s peaceful life is disrupted by unsettling rumors suggesting France might resume nuclear weapons testing in the area. While he's told this isn’t true and relays that information to the islanders, disappearances begin, and the military presence alongside a growing desire for self-determination among the locals creates complications that become a significant problem for him. The question arises: can he resolve these issues? And are there even problems to be solved? A major flaw with this film is its excessive length; it could easily be trimmed by an hour without any detriment. The political maneuvering and island secrets would also improve with some editing, possibly eliminating many scenes featuring his car ride. Magimel gives a competent performance, but he’s mostly on his own because the other actors find it difficult to develop a storyline that feels somewhat fragile and struggles to maintain engagement as it unfolds. There are enjoyable parts, but unfortunately not enough of them. Also, it rains quite often in the film.
