It’s hard to dismiss the appeal of pure spectacle, and Steven S. DeKnight seems aware of that, bringing in John Boyega and Scott Eastwood for a visually driven experience continuing from the 2013 film. "Lambert" (Eastwood) is tasked with training his squadron as they face an even more formidable force—not “Transformers,” but rather “Kaiju”—while a gateway between our world and theirs opens, creating significant peril. The unfolding events offer some unexpected moments, though Boyega already had experience from "The Force Awakens" (2015) and Eastwood from "F&F 8." One wonders about their presence in this film! At least Cailee Spaeny was early in her career. The narrative lacks originality, feeling heavily borrowed from other sources; the dialogue fluctuates between unremarkable lines and overly enthusiastic pronouncements, and the overall aesthetic feels geared toward a young Saturday morning audience—even missing the standard romantic scene. While it’s evident that considerable resources were invested, the film's visual style is repetitive and predictable, leaving one to question its necessity. It seems destined for streaming platforms.
