This film isn't something I would include in a personal selection of favorites—if I ever bothered to compile such a thing—but I do find it appealing, which is saying something. Without the contributions of the skilled actors in the leading roles, Garry Marshall’s direction, and a clever screenplay (the writer has credits including Pay It Forward), this could have easily been a disappointing experience. Instead, it delivers plenty of laughs, features endearing young performers, shows some growth for the characters, and offers an enjoyable time overall. The transformation of Goldie Hawk from a snobbish, superior-attitude wealthy woman into a vulnerable, self-aware amnesiac mother who feels unprepared for parenting is genuinely entertaining to witness. Her understanding of herself doesn’t stem from regaining her memories, but rather from what the Kurt Russell character tells her; she even acknowledges having been promiscuous. It's certainly sexist, but at least she’s applying that label to herself, and ultimately she does support her family. It’s a pleasant, inoffensive diversion. I wouldn’t actively seek it out for viewing, yet I also wouldn’t switch the channel if it happened to be on. As an afterthought, I haven't seen the updated version, so I am unable to offer any comparisons. It’s likely best to evaluate each film individually, though, isn’t that right?
