The narrative itself is quite strong, though the film’s execution has shortcomings. I'm still awarding it a high score due to the story’s merits, aspects of the performances, and the visuals. The core story is compelling, but its presentation in this movie falls short. That’s where the problems lie. The initial scenes feel awkward, with some acting that seems unnatural coming from performers who are generally very good. What's remarkable about this story is its basis in reality—a historical event largely unknown even within Mexico. Certain shots are genuinely beautiful. Following my viewing experience, I researched this era further and uncovered shocking details, like the fact that 90,000 people lost their lives during a brief but recent time frame. Although the film doesn’t entirely avoid depictions of violence, it didn't seem to effectively communicate how truly bleak that period must have been; instead, it leaned towards familiar Hollywood action sequences and heroic portrayals. Despite featuring well-known actors, Andy Garcia delivered a solid performance, but Maruicio Kuri was particularly memorable, and Oscar Isaac also stood out.
