Reno on Our Souls at Night

7/10 · Feb 4, 2018

I’m really fond of stories centered on older characters—it's a niche genre, but one I appreciate. Seeing their lives unfold and the challenges they encounter genuinely touches me, so I always look for films like this. It easily earns a spot among my favorites. The acting was exceptional; I’ve been trying to catch more movies with Redford lately, and he’s truly remarkable at his age. Jane Fonda delivered a wonderful performance as well. This is another great offering from Netflix, directed by an Indian filmmaker. The film focuses on two older men who have both spent considerable time single, now attempting to form a connection. They gradually build a relationship based on mutual understanding, but not everyone around them approves and they must navigate those obstacles to maintain it. After all, what do they really have to lose at this point in their lives? It felt very much like something that could actually happen. There aren’t any shocking plot twists or unexpected surprises—just a lovely story about love. It's admittedly a bit slow-paced, but completely worthwhile. If you enjoy dramas, this is definitely one you should see. The film is adapted from a book with the same title. My only criticism is that the ending felt somewhat unremarkable, though still satisfactory. I’m sure it will particularly resonate with older viewers and their families. It's easily one of the best films released this year. _7/10_
