The film follows a young "Willie McKay," played by Buster Keaton, as he journeys back to his Appalachian home where he quickly becomes smitten with "Virginia Canfield" (Natalie Talmadge). However, their family names carry significant weight regarding any possibility of a relationship. Similar to the families in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, there's an age-old feud that won't simply disappear because these two have fallen for each other. During a visit to her home, he learns that the "Canfield" family has made a serious pledge that could very well lead to his demise! Fortunately, they adhere to the rules of hospitality, so he must now devise strategies to remain – permanently. Will he win over his sweetheart? And will he even survive? The film contains numerous classic comedy routines, including a dynamited dam and physical fights, but it's the trains that truly stand out. There’s an impressive and amusing array of rail-based vehicles for Keaton to use for transportation and potentially to evade those chasing him. Seeing people calmly riding in carriages billowing with black smoke is quite funny. I did find the plot occasionally veered too much into melodrama, which wasn't helped by the somewhat dull musical score that made it feel slow at times. Nevertheless, the outdoor production values are excellent, and Keaton’s performance demonstrates he’s operating at his peak, making for a captivating and pleasant viewing experience.
