The film tells a watchable story about perseverance during the American Depression, even with its unremarkable cast. John Qualen, who usually appears in unusual supporting parts in John Wayne films, visits Tom Keene and Karen Mosley, who have left city life to start anew on an old farm belonging to her uncle. He’s asked to stay and assist them, and they come to understand that working together allows them to achieve more, leading to the formation of a cooperative involving local residents and those seeking employment. The impressive detail in the scene where they dig a ditch demonstrates this effectively; it's amusing to see them quickly redirecting a stream – which grows surprisingly large – to protect their corn from drought. This reinforces the spirit of trying to succeed against difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, the actors—excluding Qualen—aren’t particularly strong, and the production values are quite simple, both factors that detract from the film's overall impact. As an observation on how the economic slump of the late 1920s and 1930s affected communities, it still manages to evoke a sense of feeling.
