Anders Danielsen Lie is remarkably compelling as the character "Anders," a man attempting to overcome drug addiction. The medical professionals believe he’s made enough progress to permit him a day out in Oslo without supervision, allowing him time with his family and friends and an opportunity for a job interview. Things begin favorably; he visits “Thomas” (Hans Olav Brenner) and his family and prepares himself – figuratively speaking – for the interview. However, that's when things start to unravel, and the remainder of the film follows his day as he recalls past events, reconnects with people from those times, and seems to gradually accept what he believes is best for his future. Joachim Trier utilizes a deliberate rhythm in this drama, enabling Lie to progressively reveal his character’s internal reflections and calculated self-destructive tendencies. This isn't someone who experienced a deprived or wretched upbringing; instead, "Anders" is intelligent and personable, originating from a stable, affectionate home that, while experiencing its share of difficulties, should have fostered greater emotional resilience than what we observe. The supporting cast is consistently strong, with Malin Crépin ("Malin") being particularly noteworthy as his mind appears to be organizing itself. It’s not an effortless film to watch; it's upsetting in a subtle and restrained manner, and Lie presents us with a character who evokes both empathy and the desire to offer some firm guidance.
